My Link Isn't Working: How to Troubleshoot Common Issues

Troubleshoot common issues with short links, QR codes, and analytics on Reqlick. Fix broken links, expired URLs, scanning problems, and more.

Sometimes a link doesn't behave as expected. It might show an error page, redirect to the wrong destination, or not track clicks properly. Before reaching out to support, here are the most common issues and how to fix them quickly.

1. The Destination URL Is Broken or Inactive

If clicking your short link leads to an error page, the issue is usually with the destination URL itself, not the short link.

What to check:

• Open the destination URL directly in your browser (not through the short link). If it doesn't load, the problem is on the destination website's side.

• Make sure the URL hasn't been changed, deleted, or taken down since you created the short link.

• Check for typos in the destination URL. Even a missing letter or an extra slash can break it.

How to fix it:

• Go to your Reqlick dashboard, find the link, and click "Edit."

• Update the destination URL to the correct, working URL.

• Save the changes. The short link will immediately start redirecting to the new destination.

2. There's a Typo in the Short Link

If someone reports that your link doesn't work, the issue might be a typo in the short link itself. This happens most often when links are typed manually instead of copied.

What to check:

• Short links are case-sensitive. go.yourbrand.com/Demo is different from go.yourbrand.com/demo.

• Special characters or spaces can break a link if they were accidentally added.

How to fix it:

• Always copy the link directly from your Reqlick dashboard instead of typing it out.

• If you shared the link with a typo, create a new link with the correct alias and reshare it.

• Use the "Randomize" button when creating links to avoid typo issues altogether.

3. The Link Has Expired

If you set an expiration date on your link, it will stop redirecting after that date. This is common for limited-time campaigns, promotions, or event registrations.

What to check:

• Go to your Reqlick dashboard and find the link. Check if an expiration date was set and whether it has passed.

How to fix it:

• Edit the link and either remove the expiration date or set a new one.

• If the campaign is over and you want the link to redirect somewhere else (like your homepage), update the destination URL instead.

4. The Link Is Password-Protected

If someone clicks your link and sees a password prompt they weren't expecting, the link has password protection enabled. This can confuse recipients who don't know the password.

What to check:

• Go to your link settings and check if password protection is turned on.

How to fix it:

• If the password is intentional, make sure you've shared the password with the intended recipients.

• If it was turned on by mistake, edit the link and disable password protection.

• Save the changes. The link will immediately become accessible without a password.

5. The QR Code Isn't Scanning

If a QR code you created isn't scanning properly, the issue is usually related to print quality, size, or contrast.

What to check:

• Is the QR code large enough? QR codes should be at least 2 cm x 2 cm (about 0.8 inches) for reliable scanning.

• Is there enough contrast between the QR code and the background? Dark code on a light background works best.

• Did you add a custom logo that's too large? If the logo covers too much of the QR code, scanners may not be able to read it.

• Is the print quality clear? Blurry or pixelated prints can make QR codes unscannable.

How to fix it:

• Download the QR code in SVG format for the highest quality, especially for print materials.

• Keep custom logos small (no more than 20-25% of the QR code area).

• Test the QR code with at least two different phone cameras before printing.

• Make sure there's a quiet zone (white space) around the QR code. Don't place text or design elements too close to the edges.

6. Clicks Aren't Showing in Analytics

If your link is working but you don't see any click data in your dashboard, there could be a few reasons.

What to check:

• Analytics data may take a few minutes to appear. If you just shared the link, wait a moment and refresh.

• Make sure you're looking at the correct time range in your analytics dashboard.

• Check if you've reached your monthly tracked clicks limit. On the Free plan, you get 1K tracked clicks per month. Once the limit is reached, clicks still work but may not be tracked.

How to fix it:

• Refresh your dashboard or check back in a few minutes.

• Adjust the date filter to include the correct time period.

• If you've hit your tracked clicks limit, consider upgrading your plan for higher limits.

7. The Link Works but Shows a Security Warning

If browsers show a "Not Secure" warning when someone clicks your link, it usually means there's an SSL issue with your custom domain.

What to check:

• Go to your domain settings in Reqlick and check if the SSL certificate is active.

• If you recently connected the domain, the SSL certificate may still be provisioning.

How to fix it:

• Wait a few minutes. Reqlick automatically provisions SSL certificates after domain verification.

• If the warning persists, check that your domain provider isn't conflicting with Reqlick's SSL (for example, Cloudflare's proxy can sometimes cause issues).

• Contact support if the SSL certificate doesn't activate within a few hours.

8. The Link Redirects to the Wrong Page

If your link is redirecting but to the wrong destination, someone may have edited the destination URL, or the original URL may have been set incorrectly.

What to check:

• Open the link in your Reqlick dashboard and verify the destination URL.

• Check if a team member with access to your workspace may have edited it.

How to fix it:

• Update the destination URL to the correct one.

• If you have multiple team members, review workspace permissions to control who can edit links.
